Chicago – A federal judge sentenced a man to more than 14 years in prison for robbing seven banks in Chicago and the Noord -Buitenwijks in less than eight months on Thursday.
A jury condemned Haris Matchalovas, 41, to take in November:
- $ 4,118 from BMO Harris, 3113 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, on November 24, 2021
- $ 13,525 from Parkway Bank, 39 North Morgan Street, on February 18, 2022
- $ 7,973 from Huntington Bank, 9449 Skokie Boulevard in Skokie, on March 3, 2022
- $ 1,843 of the fifth third bank, 837 West North Avenue, on April 22, 2022
- $ 5,866 from Huntington Bank, 4042 West Foster Avenue, on 10 May 2022
- $ 2,166 from Huntington Bank, 4355 North Sheridan Road, on June 11, 2022
- $ 318 from Huntington Bank, 2485 West Howard Street in Evanston, on 3 August 2022
Matchalovas wore a surgical or fabric mask every time, wore a backpack and wore distinctive gray gloves. Officials said he showed a large knife in five robberies.
In a conviction memorandum, public prosecutors said that Matchalovas threatened to put the SH*t “out of the clock on April 22 because she started crying during the robbery.
Under the evidence that reportedly connects Matchalovas with the robberies, according to the FBI:
- Three outing cars used in the hold-ups were registered with his parents
- His phone pinged near each of the robbery places within ten minutes after each crime
- He was wearing a T-shirt “with the word” champion “written everywhere” to the robbery of 3 August, and he wore the same shirt for his driver’s license photo of Illinois driver’s license
Matchalovas started talking some of the robberies, as asking how much money was needed to open an account.
‘Hello ladies. I would like to make a recording, “he told the counters of a bank,” give me your money. “
But Matchalovas endangered violence during some robberies.
“Do you want me to put everyone here?” He reportedly warned a counter in the North Avenue location while waving a large knife. “Give me all your f*cking money.”
The prosecutors said that Matchalovas stole five cases of a Costco in the northern suburbs of Mettawa about 40 minutes after the robbery on 3 August. Shop monitoring images showed that he was still wearing the T-shirt champion.
The prosecutors asked the American district judge Thomas Durkin to give Matchalovas a prison sentence of 188 months, while defense lawyers argued for 120 months. Durkin settled for 170 months – just over 14 years – for every load. The sentences are served simultaneously.
