CHICAGO – A 16-year-old boy is accused of committing four robberies on CTA trains and platforms earlier this year, police say. Chicago police arrested the boy yesterday in the 1100 block of South Hamilton, where the county’s juvenile justice center is located, indicating there may be other cases pending.
CPD said the boy first robbed a 24-year-old man at the Cermak-Chinatown stop on July 31 shortly before 5 a.m.
Then, late September 17 and early September 18, the boy was part of a group that committed a series of robberies from the North Side to downtown, according to CPD. Within a week, a 14-year-old boy was charged in connection with the attack.
Police said the group robbed their first victim near Bryn Mawr on September 17 around 10:50 p.m. and forced him off a train at a station north of Uptown. The 30-year-old told police that five or six men wearing hoodies repeatedly punched him in the face and took his phone, glasses and AirPod case. Prosecutors also charged a 26-year-old man last month with participating in the robbery.
Shortly afterwards, a 34-year-old man reported being attacked by five to seven people somewhere between Wilson and Sheridan. The group beat him, took his phone, opened his backpack and stole his bank cards. He refused medical attention.
He is charged with three counts of theft, three counts of aggravated assault on a transit passenger and one count of armed robbery with a firearm. No further information is available about the boy because he is younger than 18 years old.
