2 men accused of 12+ armed robberies and carjacking and trying to kill an off-duty chicago cop
Angel Contreras and James Robinson (Chicago Police Department)

Two men in prison awaiting the trial because of committing a series of armed robberies and carjackings last year are now accused of committing even more such crimes, including one in which they both came into shooting with an off-Duty Chicago police officer.

Angel Contreras and James Robinson, both 21, who have been imprisoned since last fall, remain in custody pending the last allegations.

The police arrested Contreras last October after a long -term vehicle order. During a hearing two days later, prosecutors accused him of an early morning crime that started in the suburbs of Lansing on July 23, 2024. Robinson was then also accused of the crimes.

Officials said that a man and his 19-year-old son put air in their tires at Burnham Carwash, 18604 Burnham, when a black SUV stopped and four men got out around 5 o’clock with weapons.

The victims climbed in the Hyundai Kona from 2023 who had left the hijackers and drove to the Lansing Police Department to report crime. While they submitted their report, Lansing officers responded to another armed robbery outside of Planet Fitness, 17675 Torrence.

A 19-year-old woman reported that she was in her car when a Nissan-Pathfinder stopped and a group of men with weapons appeared and forced her from her Honda Accord.

About 20 minutes later, Robinson and Contreras reportedly tried a 42-year-old woman to Carjack in the 10900 block of South Oakley in Chicago. The woman drove to work when two cars blocked her path and a masked man from one of them appeared with a gun. For fear that she was about to be carjacked, she rushed away and drove to the police of Evergreen Park.

About two minutes later, at 5:32 am, an off-Duty Chicago agent had just entered his Nissan Maxima to go to a training session when Robinson rammed the officer’s car with the Honda Accord outside of planet Fitness, claim civil servants.

Contreras and Robinson both opened fire on the officer as he tried to return from the situation, said prosecutors. A shootout followed, but no injuries were reported.

Robinson, who was on a trial for a crime gun when the crimes took place, was also accused of going on a different robbery one day before the incidents described above.

At about 8 hours, two Xfinity technicians, age 39 and 41 years, repairs in the 2700 block of West 80th Street and started driving away in individual workers. When they left an alley, a stolen Hyundai Kona stopped next to them and two masked men got out with guns. A shooter approached every work car and robbed the technicians. Prosecutors say that Robinson was one of the shooters.

That same morning, officials say, he:

  • Damn men aged 26 and 30 in the 6700 block of South Morgan around 4 am
  • I approached a 62-year-old woman around 5:57 am when she was at a CTA bus stop in the 7900 block of South Campbell with a gun and ordered her to “not move”. The prosecutors said he took her phone and wallet.
  • Robbed and shots on a man in the 2800 block of West 79th Street at 6.30 am
  • Robbed a 43-year-old woman of her bag and keys in the 8000 block of South Troy at 7 am

Officers of Justice also accused him of the carjacking of a 70-year-old man in the 2600 block of West Pershing and to rob two more victims in the 3300 block of West 62nd Street on September 24, 2024.
