Volkswagens next generation Multivan is launching in Australia first quarter of 2025and it will be the most passenger car-like version of the people mover yet.
Unlike the existing Multivan, which is based on the same commercial vehicle platform as the T6.1 Transporter range, the new T7 model is based on the VW Group’s MQB Evo modular passenger car platform.
The move to an automotive platform is said to deliver significant improvements in refinement, ride and handling, as well as giving the Multivan better access to the electrification options compatible with the architecture that underpins models such as the Golf and Tiguan.
The Transporter, meanwhile, will move to a commercial vehicle platform shared with the Ford Transit Custom.

The new platform comes with a highly configurable installation. The rear seats come standard in a 2+2+3 configuration, although owners can slide, remove and swivel the rear seats into up to seven different configurations.
Volkswagen’s T7 Transporter will launch in Australia in just one diesel-only variant, although the brand has confirmed another engine option will be added to the range later next year. Details about that engine have not yet been revealed.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, although Volkswagen Australia says the price will likely be similar to the outgoing T6.1 Multivan.
With the next generation Multivan, Volkswagen is targeting the likes of the best-selling Kia Carnival, with the underpinnings of the passenger car expected to align it more closely with established options in the passenger car segment.
Prices
While Australian prices are currently unknown, Volkswagen Australia says it is unlikely to differ much from the previous generation.
The T6.1 Multivan range currently starts at $72,290 (on-road) and goes up to $95,690 (on-road). In the UK, where the T7 Multivan range is already on sale, prices start at £48,375 (A$93,444) and go up to £64,561 (A$124,710).
Powertrains
Only one engine will be available at launch, although Volkswagen Australia says another unspecified engine will be added to the range in 2025.
In Europe, the Multivan is offered with a choice of two four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 100kW/220Nm and a 2.0-litre 150kW/320Nm – plus a plug-in hybrid.
The latter pairs a 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with an 85 kW electric motor, a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, good for a total power of 160 kW and a range of 50 km on electric power alone.
