Volvo’s First electric vehicles (EVs) have been SUVs and human movers, but now it has unveiled an electric sedan.
Or does it have? Volvo says it’s new ES90 – here at the end of 2025 – is not only a sedan and borders borders instead.
“Some may say it’s a sedan. Others will see a fastback, or even hints from an SUV. We let you be the judge, “the company says in the press release.
Volvo says that it combines the “refined elegance of a sedan, the adaptability of a fastback and the spacious interior and higher ground string associated with SUVs, without the compromises of those body styles.

Conceptually it is reminiscent of the Polestar 2, another product from under the GEYY Holding Group -Paraplu.
Technically it is not a sedan, but rather a liftback, just like the Polestar, and there is 424L boat space. This extends to 733L with the rear seats and these can be folded separately.
There is also 22L space under the hood.
Although it is higher than the gasoline/plug-in hybrid S90 sedan, Volvo says that it still has a 0.25 trailing coefficient in the market, but the best figure of every car that the brand has ever built.
Volvo’s ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights function, while within it he C-shaped rear lights plus LED lights in the rear window in the rear window, just like the EX30.
A choice of four -wheel options is available, ranging from 20 to 22 inches, while the ES90 can be obtained in seven different outdoor finishes.
It runs on the Spa2 architecture that underlies the EX90 Electric SUV and is on a wheelbase of 3.1 m long.
The ES90 also uses the Volvo Cars Superset Tech Stack, a single set of hardware and software modules that are used in all upcoming electric cars from the brand.
It is Volvo’s first vehicle with an 800-volt electrical architecture, which Volvo says it makes it faster and make better overall performance and efficiency possible.
Volvo offers the following variants:
- Extensive range with one engine: up to 245 kW, 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds
- Twin Motor: up to 330 kW, 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds
- Twin engine performance: up to 500 kW, 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds
Reach is a maximum of 700 km below the WLTP cycle in models with double motors with four-wheel drive with the 106kWh battery and up to 650 km in the extensive range with one motor with its 92 kWh battery.
These figures see that the ES90 the rival BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz Eqe defeated, which reach 627 km and 626 km of WLTP range respectively.
Energy consumption is 16.1 kWh/100 km in the single motor Extensive range model and 17.1 kWh/100 km in both twin engine versions.
The company says that 300 km range can be added in 10 minutes when using a 35 KW DC Fast Charger.
Inside there is a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen built with Google, with enclosed Google Maps, Google Assistant and more apps that can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.
There is a 9.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display.
There is a range of sound systems available, where the crème of the crop is a setup with 25 speakers Bowers & Wilkins with monitor speakers and ceiling speakers Plus Dolby Atmos.
There is a panoramic roof that Volvo says the UV protection offers up to 99.9 percent. It is also available in an electrochrome version, if you can adjust the transparency of the glass.
Quad-zone climate control with an advanced air purifier that can stop up to 95 percent of the PM 2.5 particles, also functions, plus environmental lighting with six themes for “sensory welfare”, and various upholstery options.
The ES90 has a series of active safety technology, including the director’s attention control and a safe exit warning. This is powered by one Lidar, five radars, seven cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors.
A rear detection system for occupants can feel a sub-millimeter scale movement, including the soft breathing of a baby, while the Surround-view camera has a 3D view.
The ES90 is the sixth electric vehicle from Volvo and connects the EC40 and EX40 (Née C40 and XC40 charging) SUVs as well as the newer EX30 and EX90 SUVs and only China EM90 People Mover.
Volvo expands his series of EVs, which will grow with the EX60 next year. This is an electric counterpart of the XC60, which will debut the new Spa3 platform.
In the presentation of the financial results of 2024, Volvo also teased an extra two models on the SPA3 platform, plus a long-term plug-in hybrid (PHEV) on a non-specific platform developed for China.
In addition to new EVs, Volvo will also continue to renew its existing range of gasoline/plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Jim Rowan, the global CEO of Volvo, says that the brand is planning this year to launch five brand new or renewed products, with another five new or renewed models in 2026.
