An Indianapolis man who rode all the way to Chicago with a gun appeared in the house of his ex and then shot an innocent bystander, received a 9-year punishment on Wednesday.
Gregory Mulkey, 33, received the punishment from Judge Aleksandra Gillespie after he had declared guilty of aggravated discharge of a firearm in the direction of an occupied vehicle, according to judicial data.
In September 2023, the girlfriend of Gillespie of about six months went out with him because of his always “irrational” behavior, prosecutors said. Four days later, Mulkey reportedly drove from Indianapolis to the apartment building of his ex of his ex in the 3700 block of West Leland.
He first approached a man who was sitting in a car behind the building and accused him of ‘being’ his ex, claimed public prosecutors. Mulkey tried to hold the side of the man’s car while he drove away.
A neighbor called 911 after hearing Mulkey who screamed the name of his ex while he showed ‘extreme instability’, according to prosecutors.
Minutes later, when another neighbor cleaned up her house outside, Mulkey returned with a gun. The prosecutors said the woman saw him with the weapon and sprinted in her house while Mulkey fired the gun. A bullet hit the foot of the 20-year-old woman, who was still outside the doorway.
The woman, who is not related to Mulkey or his ex, received seven stitches to close a thoroughly shot wound. Doctors said they suffer serious nerve and tissue damage according to officers of justice.
Before the police arrived, Mulkey moved to the front of the apartment building, squatted down, took a shooting and shot another round before hiding in some bushes near a school, civil servants claimed.
While the police were investigating the situation, Mulkey returned to the scene and jumped into a team car, claiming that someone had shot at him, prosecutors claimed. The police spoke with witnesses and soon realized that the man they were looking for was already in their team.
Officers also found a gun that Mulkey’s ex said she knew he had. And while he was in the police, a bullet fell out of his pocket that corresponded to the evidence found on the crime scene, officers of Justice said.
Mulkey’s punishment will be halved for good behavior and further reduced by 593 days of credit he earned pending the test.
