Chery’s new small SUV, popular out of the gate, propels the brand beyond BYD

Chery set a monthly record in November 2024, pushing it past Chinese brand BYD this month.

A total of 1,762 Chery vehicles were delivered in November, of which the bestseller was by far the Tiggo4 Pro.

Chery delivered 745 units of its new entry-level SUV in the first full month of sales, more than the Omoda 5 (542 sales), Tiggo 7 Pro (203) and Tiggo 8 Pro Max (272) and accounting for 42.3 percent of sales sales figures. the brand’s turnover.

Not only that, the Tiggo 4 Pro outsold other small SUVs such as the Kia Seltos (473), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (627), Nissan Qashqai (302), Suzuki Vitara (324) and Toyota Corolla Cross (639).

It also already beats the more expensive Jeep Compass, Skoda Kamiq and Suzuki S-Cross in year-to-date figures, with 1,099 sales. It accomplished this feat against the Jeep and Suzuki in just one full month.

Chery says it expects the Tiggo 4 Pro to be its best seller by 2025. It is the cheapest Chery, priced from $23,990.

With 1762 sales, Chery also passed BYD (1552 sales) in the monthly count for the first time.

The caveats here are that BYD still has a significant lead this year (18,465 sales vs. 10,718 sales), while Chery arguably only has one direct rival for a BYD product so far.

That is the electric Omoda E5, which is comparable in size and price to BYD’s Atto 3.

Although Chery has previously indicated that it plans to release plug-in hybrid versions of its Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max here, these have yet to be launched locally to include BYD’s popular new Sealion 6.

That model was BYD’s best-selling car, with 847 units sold in November – 54.6 percent of the brand’s total units.

Both Chery and BYD are recent entrants to the Australian market, although the former had a presence here in early 2010 – through distributor Ateco.

BYD effectively relaunched here in 2022 with the Atto 3 after some previous attempts to sell the e6 people mover and the T3 van.

It started deliveries of Atto 3 in September 2022, while Chery started deliveries of Omoda 5 in April 2023.
