Our epic drag racing series is back in action! You’ll see some of the world’s most impressive supercars go head-to-head in quarter-mile drag races at our regional airport base in Wyalkatchem, Western Australia.
A huge thank you must go to our friends at Caltex for helping us cover the costs of organizing this event. It is an incredibly expensive undertaking and none of this would be possible without their support.
The cars we drive today are powered by Premium 98 Caltex with Techron. It has been scientifically proven that Caltex with Techron helps clean and protect engines. A clean engine helps maximize power and acceleration, ensuring better fuel economy, reliable performance and a smooth ride. Go to Caltex.com/au for more information.
The cars
This is a bloody exciting drag race. We pitted one of the craziest hypercars on the market, the McLaren Senna, in 765LT against a more ‘reachable’, mainly road-going McLaren, to find out which is faster.
They share a very similar engine and although the Senna is built almost entirely from carbon, it weighs around 30kg less than the 765LT. But we think the Senna will be slowed by the drag of its giant wing.
McLaren Senna
The Senna is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 588kW of power and 800Nm of torque. It uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and sends torque to the rear axle.
It has a top speed of 335 km/h, which is just crazy! Although the official 0-100 km/h time is 2.8 seconds, it will be difficult to get to grips with our unprepared runway surface.
McLaren 765LT
The 765LT has a similar top speed of 330km/h and uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 563kW of power and 800Nm of torque. It also features a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with Launch Control, which also sends torque to the rear axle.
It also has an identical claimed 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds, so this is close!
Results
Vehicle | 0-100 km/h | 80-120 km/h | 0-200 km/h | 1/4 mile |
---|---|---|---|---|
McLaren Senna | 3.96s | 1.48s | 9.50s | 11.02s @ 219.50 km/h |
McLaren 765LT | 3.54s | 1.39s | 7.98s | 10.43 s @ 233.41 km/h |
The results speak for themselves. It was SO close, but it looks like that extra drag on the Senna slowed it down a bit. Still an incredibly fast result, but it shows how much power both cars have.
Also keep in mind that it is an unprepared surface, making it even more difficult for high-powered cars to get off the line and gain traction.
