CHICAGO – Police are issuing a new warning that Lyft and Uber drivers will want to keep in mind. It involves a series of robberies and thefts targeting taxi drivers accepting calls for service in three blocks along the same South Shore street.
Eight rideshare drivers have been targeted in the 6700 to 6900 blocks of South Crandon since August 30, according to Chicago police.
Each time, the rideshare driver picked up two male customers. One of them asked to use the driver’s phone to make a call, after which both potential passengers fled the car with the device.
The situation escalated during two incidents when one of the perpetrators showed a gun while demanding the drivers’ phones.
CPD said cases have been reported in the following locations:
6700 block of South Crandon
- August 30 at 12:03 PM
- September 6 between 2 a.m. and 2:15 a.m
- September 6 at 4 p.m
- September 8 at 5:30 PM
- September 11 at 12:30 PM
6800 block of South Crandon
- August 30 at 10:30 am
- September 9 at 6:18 am
6900 block of South Crandon
- September 6 between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m
Police described the suspects as men between the ages of 12 and 20 wearing hoodies.
