Final new vehicle sales data for 2024 has arrived, and last year a well-known group of models topped the charts.
It’s not surprising that Toyota makes the list, and so does the presence of three cars from established brands.
The only nameplate to drop from the annual list of top five sellers was the MG ZS small SUV, which was recently treated to a comprehensive update.
Another family hauler has replaced the ZS in a record year for new vehicle sales in Australia.
So without further ado, let’s break down the top five best-selling vehicles of the year. These are the vehicles that recorded the most deliveries during the 2024 calendar year, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
We’ve also provided links to reviews of the top-rated variants of each model tested by the AutoExpert team all year round.

Ford Ranger
Ford’s ever-popular Ranger ute surpassed the Toyota RAV4 to become the best-selling car of 2024, with 62,593 deliveries recorded.
The Ranger became the first Ford model since the EB and ED Falcon (1992/93) to achieve consecutive annual sales wins, and did the best of all others in 2024 AutoExpert reviews.
Apart from the introduction of a new, off-road-ready Tremor variant, few changes have been made to the Ranger through 2024. It is still offered with a choice of three powertrains: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel liter turbo-diesel V6 and 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version will be added to the range in 2025.
Prices range from $36,880 plus on-road costs for the base single cab, to $90,440 plus on-road costs for the performance flagship Raptor.
Our top-rated variant for 2024 was the Wildtrak V6, which scored an 8.6/10 in testing by Matt Campbell last January.

Toyota RAV4
Like the Ranger for Ford, the RAV4 has been a sales darling for Toyota for a number of years, including 2024, when it overtook the HiLux to become the Japanese brand’s bestseller for the first time. The Japanese manufacturer delivered 58,718 units of the RAV4 last year, an increase of 98.2 percent compared to the previous year.
The RAV4 range is now powered exclusively by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid engine, mated to a CVT transmission and front- or all-wheel drive.
Toyota claims outputs of 160 kW for front-wheel drive versions, 163 kW for all-wheel drive versions and 221 Nm for both. Fuel consumption varies between 4.7 l/100 km and 4.8 l/100 km.
All variants have a five-star ANCAP safety rating and are covered by Toyota’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
While the entry point is $42,260 before on-road costs, our highest-scoring model last year was the Hybrid Edge, which Jack Quick gave an 8.3/10.

Toyota HiLux
The podium is completed by the Toyota HiLux, a testament to Australia’s love for utes. No fewer than 53,499 HiLux vehicles were delivered in 2024, down from sales in 2023, when the Ranger broke its seven-year streak as Australia’s favorite model.
A total of 29 HiLux variants are offered, ranging from the base single-cab WorkMate version with manual controls to the flagship GR Sport double-cab.
There are four powertrains available across the range. The entry-level WorkMate versions of the ute are powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, while the HiLux SR, SR5 and GR Sport are powered by a 2.8-litre turbo – diesel four-cylinder. The V-Active mild-hybrid system adds a motor generator, 48V battery and DC/DC converter to the 2.8-liter turbo diesel.
As you’d expect given the extensive nature of the HiLux range, the price also varies considerably. At the very bottom of the line-up you can get a base WorkMate for $26,475 plus on-road costs, while the top-spec GR Sport will set you back almost $75,000 before on-road costs.
A number of variants have been tested by the AutoExpert team in 2024, but it was the SR5 with V-Active Technology that scored the best, with a score of 7.7/10 from tester Jack Quick.

Isuzu D-Max
Isuzu’s D-Max was the third best-selling vehicle in its segment and the fourth most popular overall (30,194 deliveries), behind only Toyota and Ford models.
The Isuzu D-Max is offered with a choice of two four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines: a 1.9-litre with 110 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque, and a 3.0-litre with 140 kW and 450 Nm.
It is also available in 25 different flavours, from a 4×2 single cab for the workplace to 4×4 double cab lifestyle variants. At the top of the range is the new D-Max Blade, a locally developed take on the off-road ute sub-genre.
All D-Max models are covered by a six-year, 150,000km warranty, with the logbook serviced every 12 months or 15,000km.
Our pick of the variants tested in 2024 was the LS-U+, which offers some extra interior comfort over the rest of the range and the beefier of the two powertrains on offer. When tested by Max Davies in September it scored an 8.1/10.

Mitsubishi Outlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander ranked fifth in the sales charts last year, with 27,613 deliveries registered.
A popular option in the mid-size SUV segment, the Outlander can be had with petrol or plug-in hybrid power, although the latter comes at a higher price.
The entry-level models come with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 135 kW and 244 Nm of torque, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV boosts power to 185 kW and 450 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels or to all four wheels via a CVT transmission.
Fuel consumption ranges between 1.5 l/100 km (PHEV) and 8.1 l/100 km (petrol), depending on the variant.
Prices start at $37,740, plus on-road costs, for the base five-seat ES, and top out at $73,790, plus on-road costs for the GSR PHEV.
Just below the GSR PHEV is the plug-in Exceed Tourer, which sits at the top From AutoExpert Ratings for 2024 at 8.2/10, awarded by James Wong in July.
