Apple has packed a lot in iOS 18, not only the mobile operating system, but also all apps that run on top – and one of the most useful upgrades is in the notes app. You can now record speech memos directly in nuts and even have the text transcribe while you talk.
There are all kinds of scenarios in which you find this useful, from lectures to interviews to your own personal thoughts and reflections. You can listen to the speech nuts and view the text whenever you want, and also export the text elsewhere (if you have to share notes from a meeting).
Note that the Voice Memos app contains transcription functions with iOS 18 – so that you can use it as an alternative to notes.
Take out voices
With a note open on your iPhone, tap the paper clip icon on the toolbar under the note and then choose Record audio. You will receive a new recording interface on the screen: Use the big red button to start recordings and tap again to pause and resume the recording. If necessary, you can include different segments in the same audio file.
The playback control on the recording screen is all simple: you can listen to what you have already recorded via the play button and use the spring buttons on both sides to go forward or backwards in the audio in steps of 15 seconds. Note that you cannot resume a recording unless you are at the end.
Tap the speech bubble in the left corner and you can switch between the sound wave view and the transcription view. If you start recording while the transcription display is displayed, you will see the text update in real time while you talk. If you play the audio in the transcription mode, the text is marked when the clip plays.
If you have enabled Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, you have access to a few extra functions. You can tap the Summary button at the top to see a summary generated by AI of everything you have said so far, which can be useful if you record long audio clips (for example for meetings and presentations).
At the top of the recording you can see a date and time stamp to help you identify it, and you can give it a name by tapping the three dots (top right) and Resuming– Probably a good idea to avoid a whole series of clips that is just called “new recording”. If you are satisfied with your clip, tap Finished To save it in the memorandum.
Access to speech notes
Recordings appear as small inclusions in nuts and you can have several clips in the same note as you need. Each embedded recording comes with a preview compensation generated by AI and you can also see the clip length and title. To have the audio play, simply tap the play button.
Tap the title of the speech recording to go back to the main recording screen. From here you can listen to the clip, view the full transcription and add more audio at the end of the file, just like you could make it for the first time. Crane Finished Or wipe down to go back to your note.
When you are on the recording and transcription screen, tap the three points (top right) to find more options to play with. With the menu you can add the full text of the transcript to your note, copy the transcript to the iPhone clamping board (for pasting in another app) or searching the transcript.
You can also save the Audioclip in the main files app on your iPhone or share the clip with another app. Finally there is one To delete Option, who knew the recorded audio and the attached transcript. Everything you remove is completely wiped and cannot be reduced, so be careful for this (you get a mounting screen before you always delete).
These transcription functions can also be applied to existing audio recordings; You don’t have to record anything new. Tap the paper clip icon in a note, choose Attach file And select an audio file and it is embedded in the same way as a live recording. Tap the audio file to see a transcription.
