Millions of American school kids have fallen victim to a huge data breach after a company that follows their personal information has not been taken any basic precautionary measures.
A study by CyberSecurity Firm Crowdstrike noted that PowerSchool-that a much-used Student Information System (SIS) exploits in which is probably the biggest hack against American K-12 students in history, NBC News, NBC News, report.
The SIS software from PowerSchool helps schools helps to follow the presence, figures, addresses and often very specific personal information of students, such as SOFI numbers or health history.
The company has allowed that an “incident” took place that came from a vulnerability Powersource, one of the community-oriented customer service portals.
Power School revealed that “current and former students and educators” had compromised their names, contact details, birth dates, limited medical warning information, SOFI numbers and “other related information”. Crowdstrike, which was hired by Power School to investigate the incident, reported that the hacker easily obtained the password from a single employee at Power School and then used a “maintenance access” function to have them download the information from the students.
