At nearly 27 wooded hectares outside the city of Catskill, New York, artist Matt Bua Has been working hard on a creative compound like no other. For two decades, he has built an environment built by the artist of stored materials consisting of numerous living spaces and work areas. The BUA project originated with the idea of ”building one of every type of home that we could with materials that were easy to hand,” the artist tells Colossal. From recycled vinyl plates, bottles and recovered wood, a vast “recycled city” emerged as painted plates, sculptures and unique structures appeared over time.

BUA describes its approach as a ‘intuitive building’, working in response to the natural terrain, found materials and allotment structures of the northeast. He wrote a book entitled Talking walls” That focuses on the tens of thousands of kilometers of historic stone walls in the region and considers merge as history and material culture in the ways in which we understand ‘place’.
BUA lived in Brooklyn when he bought the property. “The only thing I wanted to do was go there and build,” he recently said Artnet.
