Boy, believed to be 14 years old, arrested after man was beaten and carjacked near Millennium Park

CHICAGO – A juvenile, believed to be a 14-year-old boy, is expected to be charged with beating and carjacking a man near Millennium Park, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.

The victim was in the 300 block of East Randolph, near Millennium and Maggie Daley parks, when at least one person attacked him around 1:15 a.m. He was punched, knocked to the ground and kicked. EMS took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.

A Chicago police officer saw part of the attack unfold via a surveillance video feed and reported that the assailant and another person got into the victim’s Honda and drove away. Yet they did not go far.

A patrol officer from the CPD Drag Racing Enforcement Unit saw two people jump out of the Honda and run through Maggie Daley Park. He started chasing them on foot.

Officers searched the park and adjacent areas of Grant Park for more than 45 minutes on foot and by air. They eventually arrested the suspect at Monroe and Lake Shore Drive. A source familiar with the matter said he is a juvenile who claimed to be 14 years old.

A CPD spokesperson could not immediately confirm details of the incident because officers were still completing their reports.
