Google has searched apps from the Android App Store, with about half in the past year.
A new Techcrunch report (using figures from App figures) notes that the Google Play Store fell the worldwide to around 1.8 million apps from 3.4 million apps from the beginning of 2024 to today. That is a loss of 47% of the apps that are available for Android users.
This is also not a general trend, because Apple’s iOS App Store library grew so slightly in the same time, from 1.6 million to 1.64 million apps.
Why do Android apps disappear?
The shorter, more lax app assessment process from Google has led to a proliferation of poor quality and even outright scammer apps in the Google Play Store.
The large number of apps has made it harder for the real article of hard -working developers to be noticed.
This led Google to increase its minimum requirements for app apps in July 2024 – Smack Bang in the middle of the period in question. From this point, Google announced that it would drop apps that had ‘limited functionality and content’ instead of being broken.
What does Google say about the drop in apps?
In response to this study, Google also revealed that it had invested in AI drew detection to reduce the hostile apps in the Play Store, and setting stronger privacy laws.
The result of these combined measures is that the company has rejected the applications of a stunning 2.36 million apps and more than 158,000 developer accounts prohibited possibly possibly harmful or policy-floating apps that were made available to Android users.
However, it is worthwhile to notice a last point: app -releases have increased by 7.1% from April. Hopefully this indicates a revival of real apps and games of top quality instead of a return to the Wild West days of the Google Play Store.
