A man who killed two women and injured five others, while they reportedly drove 107 km / h on the Dan Ryan Expressway with a gun on his lap, was sentenced on Friday to 18 years in prison.
Marcus Holmes, 41, argued guilty of two counts of Dui that caused a fatal accident and one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a criminal with earlier convictions, according to the court reports.
The crash took place in the incoming jobs of the Dan Ryan Expressway near 47th Street around 10:50 PM on January 22, 2023.
Prosecutors said that a driver hit the central distributor and stopped a second driver to help because the wreck partially blocked an exith count. While a good Samaritan dragged a traffic cone to the disabled car, Daphene Monroe delayed, 43, who rode with three passengers.
Holmes hit the back of the Monroe vehicle at 107 km / h and killed her and one of her passengers, Patrice Dean, 44, said prosecutors. The other two passengers in Monroe’s car were injured. Data from the Black -Box in the Holmes car would have shown that he did not brake before the collision.
Monroe’s vehicle hit his side and hit the good Samaritan and the driver who had hit the median, making both serious injuries for both. Holmes suffered a broken hip and thigh. A blood test in the hospital revealed that his alcohol content in the blood was 0.215, well above the legal limit of 0.08, prosecutors said during his first appearance.
Paramedics of Chicago Fire Department that took Holmes from the wreck found a loaded gun on his lap.
On Friday, judge Michael Clancy Holmes convicted for each DUI count and 14 years for the firearm tax, to be operated simultaneously. Holmes received 859 days of credit for his sentence spent the time wearing a single monitor while the case was awaiting.
