A police officer in Chicago was shot and killed as he tried to arrest an armed suspect in the Chatham district on Thursday evening, the police said SUperintendent Larry Snelling in Chicago.
Krystal Rivera, 36, has been with the power for four years.
“She was a mother,” said Snelling. “She loved her work and the way she worked, it was clear that she loved her work, and she wanted to make Chicago a better place. She wanted to make it safer. And we thank her for that.”

“For me it is a privilege,” she said about her decision to become a police officer. “I come from a family of serving. To help people in need is my calling.”
Details of the shooting, including those who fired Schoten, remain unclear. Snelling said that detectives obtained a house search for the apartment where the incident took place.
During a nocturnal press conference, Snelling said that officers tried to stop a person who was suspected of having a firearm in the 8200 block of South Drexel when he met an apartment in a nearby apartment around 9.50 p.m.
Officers who chased the suspect were confronted in the apartment by a second person who had a rifle aimed at the police, Snelling explained.
Rivera was shot during the confrontation and both suspects fled through the back of the apartment.
CPD issued a media statement and said that an officer fired a firearm during the confrontation, but the statement did not say whether anyone else fired shots.
“We will only know that until the house search order is served,” said Snelling. “The proof that we collect usually tells us, and it tells us a story about what happened there.”
He said that officers found three firearms.
Back -up officers hurried Rivera to the University of Chicago Hospital in a team car. During the transport, the vehicle caught up in the vicinity of 59th Street and Cottage Grove, so that officers force her to another patrol truck.
Snelling said that researchers had held “different” people, including one person they specifically believe it was on site when officers were confronted by the person who had a gun.
The chief inspector said that Rivera “worked extremely hard in the 6th district to get weapons off the street to save lives.” Before he was shot, Rivera had already processed two other weapons during her service, according to Snelling.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, who spoke at the press conference outside the hospital, praised Rivera and said that she “served honorably and courageously.”
“Her young, energetic and daring approach to protect us is the memory we will honor,” Johnson continued. “And let’s also pray for her partner, who acted bravely and quickly.”

Provisional statement about police-involved shooting in the 8200-block of S. Drexel Avenue.
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, at around 9.50 pm, Chicago officers were assigned to the 6th (Gresham) District Tactical Team in Patrouille when they tried to perform a research stop on a male suspect in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue.
When officers approached, the suspect fled on foot in a nearby building. The officers chased the suspect to the building, where they were confronted by an armed perpetrator in the house in which the perpetrator fled. During the meeting, an officer fired his weapon. The armed perpetrator fled the house and was taken into custody.
An officer walked up a shot wound and was taken to an area hospital, where she collapsed with her injuries. An extra officer ran an injury to the wrist and was taken to the hospital in a reasonable state. No additional injuries were reported.
Three firearms were on scene. The research team of the research is research and Copa was informed.
