Piping clay with bakery tools, Ebony Russell Creates a series of delicious ships in a prism of colors.
Russell’s practice is based in both the relationship between form as a function and the nature of the ship itself as a container for memory and gesture. “I am interested in how material can bear emotion and presence,” she says. “Much of what I make starts with personal experience, but I hope it will open space for others to think.”

Intrigued by the aesthetics and the process of cakes, the Australian artist originally concentrated on sculptural motifs such as brid and bride groom or Ballerina toppers, but the cherry itself gradually emerged as a focus. “I was looking for a way to build with clay that felt smoother and intuitive,” she tells Colossal. “When I started using piping bags, I loved directness and texture – it felt like I had the space in space.”
Some of the works shown here are included in the current solo exhibition of Russell, Frivolous, bee Martin Browne Contemporary In Sydney, which continues up to and including 21 June. Find more about the artist website And Instagram. (Via PAN))
