Chicago-a man from Chicago accused of carjacking after his victim took out a gun and kept him under shot until the police arrived, received a 10-year prison sentence on Monday.
Darrius Berry, 19, received the punishment from Judge Thomas Hennelly after he had declared guilty of one counting of vehicles, according to judicial data.
Around 6:28 am on January 2, 2024, the Chicago police who responded to a call from a “Burger holding a perpetrator” found the 39-year-old Carjacking victim who kept Berry under shot in the 9400 block of South Laflin Street.
The victim explained that he was in his Mazda CX-9 from 2021 when Berry ran to the window of his driver and pointed a gun on his head.
“Please give me the keys,” Berry is said to have told him. “I need your car. I’m sorry, sir … go into the house.”
The victim indicated, handed his keys and entered his house.
Once inside, he grabbed his own gun and went outside. Berry was behind the wheel of the Mazda with a firearm on the passenger chair, the report said.
“If you reach it, I will blow your head off,” the man remembered that he told Berry.
He then opened the door to his car, grabbed Berry by the collar and pulled him to the ground, officials said.
“Who’s with you?” He asked Berry, thinking that there can be henchmen.
“He is around the corner,” said Berry. But the victim said he never saw anyone else.
The police have found the Berry firearm, who is said to have left the Mazda passenger seat. A CPD report said it was stolen from a vehicle in the 1400 block of West 90th Street about a month before the failed hijacking.
With the standard 50% sentence reduction and credits of the state earned in prison, Berry is eligible for release over just over three years.
