Tesla Model Y: Options of six and seven seats closer to Australia

Electric car maker Tesla Looks set to add both six and seven seats Model YS -It is said that for the first time it will make the production of the right-hand hand a recent firmware update the beans.

Reports of Greenheonly On the social media platform X of Elon Musk confirmed that a model Y of six seats was shown as part of the update 2025.2.

The X account has a history of correct calls about upcoming Tesla details, which suggests that the more accommodating model Y will not only be limited to the Chinese market as speculated earlier.

Tesla sources currently all Australian market models from China, and the discovery means that a model of six or seven seats can be offered locally the first vehicle with seven seats from the automaker here since the larger model X SUV showrooms left at the end of 2020.

That would make it one of only a few electric vehicles with seven seats (EV) in Australia, which joined the KIA EV9, Mercedes-Benz EQB and Volvo EX90.

Carexper has contacted Tesla Australia for official comments.

Tesla previously offered the model Y with seven seats in North America, but only on vehicles made in the United States, which limited the production to left-wing ride before it was completely dropped in 2023.

The coming version with six seats would reportedly use a 2x2x2 chair with a center console that may split occupants, while versions with seven seats in the US had a 2x3x2 scheme.

Speculation has suggested that space for the new seat configurations would be supplied with an increase in the recently facial model Y’s 2890 mm wheelbase – and the current length of 4790 mm.

This could prevent the criticism, the previous option with seven seats offered abroad, was somewhat limited in the room, which may have contributed to the low recording and final removal from the option list.

The Tesla website shows the (pre-update) model Y with seven seats, with access to the third row via a lever to bring the seats in the second row forward.

The Model X is currently offered in North America in a choice of configurations of five, six and seven seats without changes in the wheelbase or the total length.

Nevertheless, the ‘Falcon’ doors on the Model X offer an easier input and exit where the model Y Conventional doors has opened – and at 5057 mm the Model X is a considerable 267 mm longer.

The Model Y was the best-selling EV in both Australia and the world in 2024, and despite a significant drop in turnover for the Tesla brand here, the most popular EV-Tot will remain today in the country (at the end of May 2025).
