For those of us who have regularly traveled through airports, the process of checking in – and checking in bags – always seems to be underway by latent fear. What if a suitcase is routed to the wrong surface or never arrives? What if it falls open or is sought? For filmmaker Lucy DavidsonIt is not so much about the luggage when it comes to what we fill inside.
As a recent student of Aardman AcademyThis is managed by the Academy Award-winning namesake Animation Studio, Davidson not only used the universal travel experiences, but also a playful exploration of the multiple meanings of ‘luggage’. In her stop animation short, appropriately entitled ‘Luggage’, we follow a trio of women, who are also suitcases, on the way to a trip.
The charming black and white story of Davidson leads us on a short but powerful journey through human emotions, especially the spectrum of feelings that we associate with self-confidence, past experiences and relationships. “Three girlfriends check their luggage at the airport, but one wears a little more than the others,” goes the slogan of the film. “While they travel along the conveyor belt to security, can she hide what’s in it?”
This year the animation of Davidson was an official selection at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and a finalist at the Sydney Film Festival. See more about the films websiteand discover more of the work of the filmmaker Her site” VimeoAnd Instagram.
