CHICAGO – A man is in critical condition after he was shot while riding in a car in River North overnight. It is the second shooting of the weekend in the city center. The previous victim died.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday, 911 callers reported people arguing and shots being fired near LaSalle and Hubbard streets. Chicago police said a 33-year-old man was sitting in an Audi SUV in the 200 block of West Hubbard when someone fired shots from a white vehicle driving down the street.
One bullet struck the victim above his right eye, while another grazed his arm. The driver of the Audi dropped him off at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The shooting occurred as the victim’s car was leaving a parking lot. Officers said they found a shell casing near the property at 226 West Hubbard.
Later, around 3:40 p.m., officers and residents in the area reported hearing more gunfire near Erie and Kingsbury. The incident did not result in any reported injuries. One witness saw someone holding a gun out the window of a large SUV, and other witnesses believed the gunman had dumped the gun in a nearby park. Police searched the area for weapons.
Saturday morning, a 24-year-old man was shot and killed during an argument in the first block of West Hubbard, a street lined with bars and restaurants. Police said an altercation between a group of people turned physical around 3:43 a.m. and escalated again when a man pulled out a gun and fired a shot.
Officers who arrived on scene chased two men who ran from the area. Police arrested both men behind Harry Caray’s restaurant, 33 West Kinzie, and recovered a .380-caliber pistol from one of them. No charges have been announced.
So far this year, six people have been shot in River North, up from 15 at this point last year and 23 at this date in 2022. Similar shooting totals for other recent years:
