Even though Halloween is long behind us, the magic has still not left the cinemas. Wicked, an adaptation of the stage musical based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, takes audiences to the beautiful land of Oz. The story follows two young witches, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda (Ariana Grande), who will become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, known from the iconic film The Wizard of Oz.

When will Wicked be released on VOD?
Universal Pictures, which is distributing the film, has not yet announced a date for Wicked to premiere digitally. However, we will try to estimate the time window based on Universal’s previous VOD releases.
The musical is considered one of this year’s major blockbusters and there are many indications that it will be a box office success. If this comes to fruition, the film could follow a similar path to Twisters, which hit theaters 25 days after its theatrical release. In that case, Wicked may appear on digital just before Christmas, around December 17, 2024.
However, Twisters’ quick release on VOD was a rather unique case. The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Despicable Me 4, which were also successful at the box office, released on digital after 41 days and 69 days respectively after their cinematic release.
Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Wicked’s digital release will take place even later – in which scenario the film could become available for purchase and rental in January or February 2025.
Please note that these dates are just predictions that Universal Pictures has yet to confirm.

When could Wicked be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
Physical copies of Universal’s films arrive on VOD after films are released. The aforementioned Twisters came out on DVD and Blu-ray 70 days after the digital release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie after less than a month, and Despicable Me 4 after just 2 weeks.
As you can see, Universal considers each film as an individual case. Based on the examples above, the best-case scenario would see copies of Wicked go on sale in late December. However, it is much more likely that they will appear in the first months of 2025.
When can Wicked be released on streaming services?
Universal’s films are streamed on DVD and Blu-ray within a month to a month and a half of release.
Peacock will be the first stop for Wicked — the film will spend four months there and then move to Netflix, where it will spend 10 months, according to the deal between the companies. After that time, the film returns to Peacock.
We estimate that Wicked may appear during streaming in the spring of 2025.
