A glass mosaic of 600 square base from the 2nd street input to the 7 train in Grand Central Station greeted commuters with a daring, cosmic map. The work of Sharmistha Ray and Dannielle Tegeder, of the feminist collective Hilma’s spirit“Abstract Futures” is a lively three -part portal to transformation.
Named after the visionary artist and Mystic Hilma Af Klint (1862-1944), the collective formed in 2020 and usually combines innovative contemporary art practices with spirituality. Their Tarot-Deck has collected a cult supporter and shares a name with this new MTA Arts & Design-Initial project (earlier), the first public artwork in the group.

Abstract futures Opens with “The Fool”, a tarot card that represents a hug of a new beginning. Brilliant red, pink and oranges together nest together in enchanting, angular forms to call for courageous, creative intuition at the start of a trip.
In the middle is ‘the wheel of the fortune’, which is meant to bring this passionate, if not naive, energy back to earth. Here, earth and brown forms a cyclical pattern that reflects a natural rhythm. Concentric bulbs and a series of ocher -colored diamonds push the viewer to the future.
The last part in the threesome is also the largest, starting with a heavenly blue triangle met by a reverse surface in Orange. This link is based on ‘the world’, creating a harmonious, uniform relationship between the shadows and wisdom that exist in all of us.
Red, horizontal rods on the right on the right on Tarot’s suit of magic winks. In general, associated with fire and primordial energy, this last segment symbolizes regeneration and the ability to start over.

In a statement, the artists say that they hope that the work inspires a new way to look at the city:
Abstract futures Is about the relationship between people, spaces and time, and intended to give a powerful reflection of what New York represents for all of us. At the same time, the city is a vast metropolis with millions of people, but also a dynamic network of interconnectivity. While we walk in New York for a day, we make contact with so many people from so many layers of the population. The density of the images, the pattern and color of the mural is a metaphor for the endless diversity of the city that is its heartbeat.
