A long-time CTA threat is murdered at the Morse Red Line station

CHICAGO – A man with a long history of criminal activity on CTA rail lines was shot and killed at the Morse Red Line station Sunday evening, according to a law enforcement source.

CWBChicago is not identifying the man in this story because officials have not released his name, but we have confirmed that he was awaiting trial for yet another robbery aboard a Red Line train at the time of his death.

Around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, at least one gunman opened fire from a dark-colored Jeep outside the Morse station, 1358 West Morse, spraying rifle bullets throughout the block, witnesses said.

The victim, 27, collapsed in the station lobby after being shot in the lower back. Storefront windows on the block were also shot, but no other injuries were reported.

EMS took the injured man to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he died.

Court records show the victim was arrested earlier this year for allegedly robbing a man at the Granville Red Line station earlier this year. He was on parole for robbing another CTA passenger at, coincidentally, the Morse Red Line station in 2020.

When prosecutors charged him with the Granville robbery earlier this year, a Cook County judge initially kept the man in custody because he posed a threat to public safety. Earlier this month, another judge, Carol Howard, released the man from all restraints, allowing him to roam the streets and do CTA while his latest robbery case continued.

CWBChicago will post a fuller profile of the man after he is publicly identified.

So far this year, 22 people have been shot in Rogers Park, up from 29 last year. In the area, 24 people were shot on this date in 2022 and 18 during the comparable period in 2021.
