CHICAGO – Officials say a Bolingbrook man and an unknown accomplice followed and carjacked a random driver on the Chicago Lawn earlier this year.

“Pulling over a vehicle, any vehicle, with a firearm stating that the [victim] would die is a threat to every human being and this [victim]” Judge Shauna Boliker wrote Friday in a detention order that will keep Jose Rios, 29, in jail pending trial.

Prosecutors told Boliker that a 28-year-old man was driving around 4:30 a.m. on March 13 when he noticed a gray Kia following him. While walking in the 3200 block of West 59th Street, he heard what sounded like a gunshot and stopped, officials said.

When he did, the Kia pulled up next to him, and Rios, who was driving the Kia, told him to get out of the car or he would die, according to the charges. Another man sitting in the Kia’s passenger seat pointed a gun at the victim and ordered him out, again telling him he was going to die, officials said.

The victim complied and Rios’ accomplice drove away in his 2003 Chevy Tahoe, prosecutors said.

A nearby Chicago police camera recorded the entire hijacking, which Boliker called a “brutal act of violence.”

Police arrested Rios this week when he appeared in court in an unrelated case in which he is accused of being one of the occupants of a car in which an Illinois State Police trooper packed cocaine, marijuana and a large quantity of cocaine earlier this month. would have found cash.
