Made of wood and several dozen canvas folding chairs, Lasovsky Johansson Architects conceived of a summer pavilion called ‘PETAL’. Originally situated as a functional installation hosting an oyster bar during an art fair in 2023, the work is currently located in the courtyard of the Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen, where visitors can stop by for a cup of coffee or a snack.
Founded by Juráš Lasovský and Hanna Johansson, the studio was founded with a collaborative mindset and a mission “to create beautiful projects rooted in place.” Many of the company’s designs involve public spaces, such as schools, cultural centers and public squares.
For PETAL, the team designed a playful, kinetic structure using 108 simple lounge chairs, arranged in the shape of a cylinder. During the day the chairs open and the piece seems to bloom. In the evening, the seats are folded to form a sturdier surface, which also doubles as a screen to capture color projections.
“The main design impetus was to use an everyday product in a new way while still retaining its original functionality,” the studio said in a statement. The temporary pavilion uses lightweight, simple loungers and is easy to assemble, disassemble and pack flat. Part functional space and part art object, PETAL invites you to a 360 degree experience.
