The accused hackers behind a Bitcoin (BTC) exploit worth nearly $250 million have reportedly shot themselves in the foot in a new leaked recording.
Days ago, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said authorities are charging California and Connecticut residents Malone Lam, Veer Chatel and Jeandiel Serrano with conspiring to steal and launder $250 million in Bitcoin after acquiring 4,100 BTC robbed of a Washington DC victim.
In a separate investigation, sleuth in chains ZachXBT posted a leaked screen share video that captured the moment the accused fraudsters realized their plan had apparently worked.
According to the blockchain researcher, one of the hackers even allowed his own real name slip several times during recording.
“Wiz (Veer) took a large percentage off theft and made a mistake during screen sharing by leaking his full name during the theft.
Additional comfort was gained by accomplices calling him Veer on audio and in chats during several recordings.

Additionally, ZachXBT offers a step by step breakdown of how the plan likely went down.
“Summary of the incident: On August 19, 2024, threat actors targeted a single creditor of Genesis by:
1) Calling as Google Support using a spoofed number to compromise personal accounts
2) Calling after Gemini support claims account has been hacked
3) Socially engineered victim to reset 2FA and send Gemini money to the compromised wallet
4) The victim used AnyDesk to share the screen and leaked private keys from the Bitcoin core.
According to court documents, that will be Lam and Serrano asked to forfeit all property obtained through the theft and to pay a monetary judgment to the defendants if found guilty. At the time of writing, no official statements have been made by authorities regarding Chetal.
