In Symbiotic utopia” Agus Putu Suyadnya Imagine a future in which tropical ecosystems that are no different than those of Southeast Asia, become locations for humanity to communicate with nature.
Surrounded by green foliage and moss -covered roots that seem to glow with blue and green fuzz, a recurring astronaut figure approaches every scene with comfort and convenience. In one work, the suitable character wises a chimpanzee à la remarkable nature conservationist Jane Goodall and waves with a large bubble wall to make paths of the iridescent orbs in the other. And in ‘Cosmic Self Healing’ the figure is in a comfortable chair, a large pot plant on his side. This typical domestic scene, however, is on the moon and the swirling atmosphere of the earth appears behind him.

Although seductive in color and density, the paintings of Suyadnya are surrealistic and a creepy future that is irreparably influenced by the climate crisis. After all, the astronaut is completely covered with a protective capsule, a sign that people can only survive with this critical adjustment. “People can’t live without nature,” says the artist, “while the natural world will continue to survive without humanity. So why, as people, do we think we have the upper hand?”
