An off-duty Chicago police officer gets involved in a shootout with an armed robbery crew

CHICAGO – An off-duty Chicago police officer became embroiled in a shootout with a robbery crew that targeted him overnight in Washington Park.

The officer was in the first block of East 57th Street when an armed man confronted him around 1:47 a.m., according to a CPD statement. Within seconds, the robber and at least one accomplice engaged the officer in a shootout, police said, but no injuries were reported.

Witnesses said the robbers, described only as four black men wearing all-black clothing, fled the area in a black SUV.

Investigators found shell casings, live bullets and an ammunition magazine in the area. Bullets flew into a window of a nearby apartment and parked cars were also hit.

As a matter of policy, COPA, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, reviews the officer’s use of force.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had become discouraged by the inaccurate information presented during local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has since expanded to Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown and other North Side areas.
