CHICAGO – An off-duty Blue Island police officer is in custody after allegedly shooting at an off-duty Chicago police officer’s car during a road rage incident Saturday night, according to internal CPD communications provided to CWBChicago.
CWB is not identifying the Blue Island officer by name because charges in the case have not yet been approved.
According to a CPD report, a female Chicago officer who was on maternity leave was in the front seat of a car that was involved in a minor accident involving the 47-year-old Blue Island officer in the 4700 block of South Union around 5:03 p.m.
After the crash, the report said, the suburban officer “pulled alongside” the Chicago officer’s car. He “pulled his weapon and fired one bullet in the direction of [the Chicago officer’s] vehicle, hitting the passenger door barrier and ricocheting off the windshield.” No injuries have been reported.
The drivers of both cars chased each other and called 911, the report said.
Illinois State Police troopers responded to the area and stopped both cars in the 5400 block of South Wentworth.
According to the CPD report, the suburban officer was taken into custody and his weapon was recovered. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center after complaining of chest pain, the report said.
According to the CPD report, a Blue Island police sergeant responded to the scene and took custody of their officer’s police ID and uniform jersey.
A CPD spokesperson issued the following statement about the incident, but the department did not identify any of the parties involved as police officers:
“In the 600 block of W. 47th St., on October 19, 2024, at approximately. 5:03 PM, a male driver, 47, while in a Toyota, produced a firearm and fired at least one round at a GMC while driving. No injuries were reported, but the GMC was struck by gunfire, causing damage. The perpetrator was taken into custody without incident in the 5400 block of S. Wentworth. A gun was recovered. Charges are pending. Detectives from the area are investigating.”
