According to reports, Apple works on two folding devices: a foldable iPhone and a large 20-inch foldable iPad.
The iPhone version is expected to be first. In July Digitimes reported that the launch is the target of 2026. A release window is not indicated for the iPad, but it is probably later.
The first foldable iPhone from Apple will probably be a model that is comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. It has a screen size that is equivalent to a normal phone, but with the possibility to fold up more compact in your pocket.
A December report from the Wall Street Journal suggested that the screen of the foldable iPhone will be larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which means a screen of at least 7 inches.
Apple is currently working on solving technical challenges that are linked to foldable devices, such as minimizing visible folds in the screen, improving the hinge design and creating a sustainable material for the screen protector. The goal is to have a finished and polished product during the launch.
Between 2019 and 2023, the market for folding smartphones grew with an impressive 40 percent on an annual basis. However, the growth rate is expected to slow up to 4 percent by 2025.
Nevertheless, experts are of the opinion that Apple’s access to the market could lead to a rapid increase in demand. Many people, for example, appreciate the concept of the Galaxy Z Flip, but are reluctant to leave the Apple Ecosystem.
Apple supposedly expects to launch its first foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026. The project, known internally as “V68”, has now left the prototype phase and is located in a more advanced development phase.
Can Apple ultimately make some of the best folding things you can buy? Time will learn it.
