Armed robber is shot and arrested as he runs from the crime scene

CHICAGO – An armed robber is hospitalized in police custody after he was shot Saturday morning as he tried to escape with two accomplices in Chatham. The other two men remain on the run.

Three armed robbers entered the Subway restaurant, 100 West 87th Street, and physically assaulted the 29-year-old employee around 9 a.m., officials said. The group displayed at least one firearm, took cash from the cash register and fled out the back door.

And that’s when one of the robbers encountered an unexpected twist. Somehow, CPD did not say how, the 27-year-old was shot in the right leg. Police found a dozen shell casings outside the back door of the restaurant, but it is unclear whether the man shot himself or someone else is responsible.

Before police arrived, the injured robber tried to run away but dropped his gun outside a nearby business. Store employees grabbed the gun, took it inside and locked the doors, witnesses said. The injured robber tried to enter the business, but failed. The police arrested him nearby and confiscated the firearm. The other two men were gone when police arrived.

Court records show the wounded suspect, who has a huge tattoo of a gun on his face, was charged in 2016 with two separate counts of attempted murder. He eventually pleaded guilty in one case and illegal firearms possession in the other. Judge Neera Walsh sentenced him to six years for the battery and three years for the weapons charge.
