The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) plans to tap the well of local talent for a large-scale public art installation along Flushing Avenue in mid-2025. Artists who live and work in Kings County can register now through December 15 to submit a detailed project proposal centering on the Yard’s chosen theme of “Our Brooklyn.”
According to the submission guidelinesArtists are expected to activate the public-facing fence line for Building 3 of the Yard, which spans approximately 450 feet between Clermont Avenue and Carlton Avenue. Creative entries can also include the adjacent fencing and forecourt of Building 92 as an extension of the Building 3 proposal or as a separate idea, as long as the artists take into account the material differences and the opening and closing of the gate’s entry points .
The request for proposals emphasizes that the Yard is “NOT interested in historically oriented stories, but in stories with a contemporary focus.”
“Emphasis should be placed on ways in which communities come together through work, social and cultural life,” BNYDC said in a statement, stressing that proposals should focus on “the intersection of economic growth and the social and cultural elements of a community, while at the same time celebrating the breadth of society.” of innovators and workers at the Yard and in Brooklyn.”
BNYDC guidelines state that the project budget totals $30,000 for the planning, creation, installation and de-installation of the work. The selected artist or group can budget a $1,000 honorarium for their involvement, split into two $500 payments for their participation in two of the three public programs surrounding the installation.
The winning proposal is expected to be selected in mid-February for a May 15 installation date.
