You’ve probably heard expressions like “going around in circles” or “running like a rabbit,” but chances are you haven’t quite pictured them that way. Bruno Pontiroli‘s scenes of zoological chaos.
In oil paintings that reference 19th-century illustrations of wildlife, the Lyon-based artist (formerly) evokes common expressions such as ‘la vie en rose’, similar to the English saying: ‘seeing life through rose-colored glasses’. And in ‘Le conflit intérieur’, or ‘internal conflict’, a tiger and a grizzly bear fight it out despite being connected.
Histoires naturelles en grotesques, Pontiroli’s solo show opens soon Corey Helford Galleryemphasizes the artist’s ongoing fascination with defying the natural order. His compositions merge animals into separate creatures, adding absurdly long legs or extending countless additional appendages from a single creature to illustrate the often farcical oddities of human behavior.
