Burglar caught with $30,000 worth of glasses just four days after being arrested for shoplifting: Prosecutors
Melvin Kirk (Chicago Police Department, Multiplottr)

CHICAGO – Prosecutors have charged a man with breaking into downtown LensCrafters just four days after he was released pending trial on shoplifting charges.

Chicago police responded to a burglary at the 205 North Michigan store around 3:15 a.m. Monday, according to a CPD report. They found the front door of the store had been smashed and a piece of concrete was on the floor.

Store security told officers the burglar was still inside the store and taking merchandise through the back door, the report said.

Police found Melvin Kirk, 45, pushing a cart containing about 10 bags of glasses behind the store, according to the charges. Kirk’s arrest report estimated the glasses were worth $30,000.

Judge Antara Rivera released him on an ankle monitor. He is charged with burglary.

Just four days earlier, around 2 p.m. on Oct. 23, police arrested Kirk at Target, 2656 North Elston, after store employees accused him of removing security wires and trying to steal two remote controls, according to a second CPD report.

The next day he was sent home without restrictions.
