The BMW iX1 has been named Australia’s best small electric SUV in the world 2026 CarExpert Choice Awardswhich is the second year in a row that it has won this award.
It beat two finalists: the Kia EV3 and the MG S5 EV.
Not only that, but its internal combustion X1 sibling also took home the award for best small luxury SUV for the second year in a row.
Due to its luxury nameplate, the iX1 isn’t the most affordable small electric SUV in Australia and even its entry-level variant is more expensive than the flagship Kia EV3 and MG S5 EV ranges.

However, we chose the iX1 because of how skillfully BMW has applied its success formula to its smallest electric SUV.
It’s fun to drive as a BMW should be, while still proving refined and comfortable.
The technology is top class and the iX1 has an interior that matches its price.
Perhaps one of the iX1’s strongest points is how little it alienates. Aside from the Hans Zimmer-developed soundtrack and the immediate off-the-line power of its electric powertrain, it will feel very familiar to someone stepping out of another BMW.
And if BMW makes such excellent cars, that’s certainly a plus.
