Chery is battling MG and BYD for the title of Australia’s cheapest electric SUV

The Chery Omoda E5 was already one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Australia, but a limited-time bonus has now made it even cheaper.

Starting January 10, Chery is offering a $6,000 bonus to buyers of the Omoda E5. An end date has yet to be announced, but all it says is that the bonus will be available for a limited time.

This means the Omoda E5 BX now starts from $36,990, excluding on-road costs, instead of the normal list price of $42,990. The Omoda E5 EX, meanwhile, has dropped to $39,990, excluding on-road costs.

MG is currently offering its base ZS EV Excite for a $36,990 drive-away, but this is for 2023 model year examples, ahead of a replacement SUV arriving in the second quarter of 2025.

Chery’s limited-time $6,000 bonus also comes just a day after BYD announced it would be launching a more affordable version of the Atto 3, with the limited-feature Essential variant starting at $39,990, excluding on-road costs.

Both versions of the Chery Omoda E5 are powered by a 150 kW and 340 Nm electric motor on the front axle, fed by a 61.1 kWh battery with a claimed WLTP driving range of 430 km.

It is backed by a seven-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, extending to eight years for the high-voltage battery.

Capped-price servicing is available for the first seven visits at 12-month intervals or 20,000km, for a total cost of $1586.

The Omoda E5 falls under the same five-star ANCAP safety rating as its petrol-powered Omoda 5 counterpart.

Prices for the Omoda 5 with turbo petrol start from $27,990 and stretch all the way up to $36,990.
