CHICAGO — The mother of convicted cop killer Emonte Morgan is now the subject of an arrest warrant, court records show, after she failed to appear in court for a case that began when she allegedly pushed officers guarding Morgan days after he Officer Ella French had killed. and seriously injured her partner in August 2021.
Evalena Flores, 44, fiercely defended her son, both after his arrest and last month, when a judge sentenced him to life in prison.
Morgan’s brother, Erick, also Flores’ son, was convicted of running from the shooting scene with the murder weapon.
“I just wanted to make it known to the public that I am not a delusional mother. I’m not in denial or confused,” Flores said said after Emonte Morgan’s sentencing. “I know my son is 100% innocent. These people will do everything they can to cover up all the mistakes they made that horrible night.”
The shootings, which occurred during a traffic stop, were largely captured by the officers’ body cameras. A third officer on the scene, who escaped injury, shot Emonte Morgan after killing French and severely wounding their partner, Carlos Yanez.
Three days after the shooting, Flores visited Emonte Morgan, who was under police guard at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. She searched the hospital via livestream to find the surgical trauma unit, a secure area that doesn’t even have a button on the public elevators. Finally she found it. Watch:
Two Chicago police officers and a hospital security officer stopped Flores from entering Morgan’s room, but prosecutors say she kicked the guard in the groin and pushed the other officers.
She was charged with assault, resisting and criminal trespass, all felonies. Flores has been fighting the charges for more than three years.
In July, she demanded a jury trial, records show.
At a hearing on September 24, almost two weeks after Emonte Morgan was sent to prison, Judge Diana Lopez noted that Flores “now said she has glaucomeana. [sic] and needs surgery.”
The judge rescheduled the hearing for Oct. 1, but Flores did not show up, court records show. Lopez ordered the clerk to notify Flores by postcard, but the state filed a motion to issue an arrest warrant and Lopez agreed.
Flores’ attorney “didn’t hear from her and her phone was not in use,” Lopez noted when he signed the order. A few days later, another note from the judge said an attorney had “zero” communication with Flores.
