Experiments is a driving force Dara SchumanCeramic practice. From her studio in Chicago, the artist evokes striking geometric shapes that seem stacked, ribbed and almost architectural. With an atmosphere of retro-futurism informed by modern style from the middle of the century, her jewelry-tinted volumetric vessels do earthy but daring glazes in deep reds, ocher and smoky blue.
“Over time I discovered that my best pieces come from exploration instead of control,” the artist explains. Sitting in front of the pottery wheel, Schuman lets her thoughts melt away before she allows her subconscious mind to take the lead. “Having the clay guided is what I like best about the medium,” she shares.
When Schuman discovers methods and movements that linger, she uses those processes as a momentum to see how far she can push both the clay and her skills. Of course, this approach naturally leads to work bodies in which the iterative pieces feel inherently harmonious and look inherent.

Schuman is currently enthusiastic about lighting and has experimented with hanging lamps and sculptural lamps. She also works on a series of mugs for one Store update In the following month. Find much more of the artist on her website And Instagram.
