Electric BMW M3 teased as performance sedan with four motors

BMW has released the first teaser images of the battery-powered super sedan iM3, which is due for release in 2028.

It will be based on the all-new BMW i3 electric sedan, which itself will be underpinned by BMW’s new generation Neue Klasse dedicated electric car platform.

However, in addition to its full-fledged M EV, BMW will also continue to sell the combustion-powered M3, the next generation of which will be powered by the Bavarian brand’s signature twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine when it also debuts around the turn of the year. 2028.

While the next-generation combustion-powered M3 will reportedly enter production in July 2028, following the launch of the new G50 Series 3 Series in November 2026 (the same month the all-new i3 is expected to enter production) , the iM3 should follow it on sale in 2028, giving the mid-size BMW sports sedan a choice of petrol and electric powertrains.

The first Neue Klass platform-based model will be the 2025 BMW iX3, followed by the 2026 3 Series.

The iM3 was previewed by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept and has been spied wearing a widened i4 body, but the bodywork on this camouflaged prototype is believed to be close to production spec.

As you can see in these low-resolution teasers shared by BMW, the iM3 will feature pumped-out wheel arches, aggressive front and rear bumpers, and pop-out door handles.

Underneath its muscular body, the iM3 is expected to house an electric motor at each wheel, providing all-wheel drive as standard and making it the most powerful BMW M car ever, with around double the power of the existing G80 series. M3 Competition (375 kW/650 Nm).

The next-generation G84-series M3, meanwhile, will feature a more powerful but cleaner, Euro 7 emissions-compliant version of the current model’s S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder.
