For Emily Van Hof (formerly) the possibilities of quilts extend far beyond two dimensions. From geometric tapestries to faceted weaves and sculptural constructions, the artist traverses a wide range of textile forms.
“I love giving my quilts more visual weight,” Van Hoff tells Colossal. “I like them to feel more solid and object-like… So I explored different ways to achieve that.”
Van Hoff often revisits original sketches and cutouts from previous pieces, piecing together new works with a variety of textures, tones and configurations. A striking recent experiment takes the form of three chain links, which can be displayed in different directions by sliding the components around, revealing unique angles and color combinations.
“Some of my tapestries have also used pieces that overlap and weave together,” says Van Hoff, “and the chain link fence is also a continuation of that idea.”
The artist recently announced a line of quilting fabric she designed Moda fabrics titled Groove, which will be available in stores from May next year. The collection expands its vibrant palette and playful, sinuous motifs.
“My background is in graphic design,” says Van Hoff. “I’ve always loved textile design and I worked in a fabric shop in high school, so this is a real dream moment!”
