Everything you need to know about the BYD Shark 6

BYD is gearing up to launch the first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) available in Australia.

Orders for the BYD shark 6 will open on October 29, when prices will also be announced, ahead of first customer deliveries in December 2024 or January 2025.

It will be the first PHEV to go on sale in Australia, beating the Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha Hi-4T to market.

Only one Premium version of the range-topping Shark 6 will be offered at launch, with four exterior paint colors and one black interior color.

This was stated by the CEO of BYD’s local distributor EVDirect, David Smitherman AutoExpert the Shark 6 is the brand’s most significant local car launch to date. The company also aims for this to be BYD’s best-selling vehicle by 2025.

In addition to the Shark 6, talks of additional BYD ute models are in the works. Examples include a fully electric version possibly called the Shark 7, a higher performance ute that could rival the Ford Ranger Raptor, as well as a larger full-size ute with higher braked towing capacity.

Prices

BYD has not yet detailed exact local pricing for the Shark 6 Premium, although the company has now confirmed that it will priced under $60,000.

At this price it would undercut the likes of the Ford Ranger

Powertrain and efficiency

The Shark 6 is powered by a version of the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine from the Sealion 6 Premium AWD, which is mounted longitudinally rather than transversely, plus two electric motors (one on each axle) and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) of 29.58 kWh. ) battery pack.

Maintenance and warranty

The BYD Shark 6 will likely be covered by the same six-year, 90,000-mile vehicle warranty and eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty as the rest of the automaker’s lineup.

BYD has not yet confirmed maintenance intervals or prices for the logbook.

Prices for the Shark’s accessories have not yet been confirmed.

Kristian Ristell, global product director of Ironman 4×4, shared AutoExpert a gross vehicle mass (GVM) upgrade for the Shark 6 is also in the works. The company aims to have it ready by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

Four paint colors will be offered for the Shark 6 at launch.
