ExpressVPN, the popular company Virtual Private Network (VPN), has announced an important upgrade of its service.
The company’s own Lightway protocol, unveiled for the first time in 2021, is now becoming even better. ExpressVPN says that the new version will offer its users a faster, safer and more reliable experience. It is also an open-source software that is currently available on Github, which means that everyone can check the code to guarantee its safety.
To achieve this, ExpressVPN has rewritten its Lightway protocol from C to Rest. As a result, it is supposedly much safer and less vulnerable to attacks compared to the previous version.
The new code is also easier and more expressive, making better performance, more battery life and stronger protection. Moreover, the new code can also be introduced more easily and quickly, while the protocol remains very safe.

The current version of the Lightway is already available on ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux and Routers. The new version of the Lightway will be rolled out over platforms in the coming months, starting with Android, without extra costs for users.
To ensure that you can start using it as quickly as possible, follow these steps:
To do this:
- Download and Install the ExpressVPN app
- Open the app and go to the menu ‘Options’
- Under the ‘Protocol’ ‘Automatic’, ‘Lightway UDP’ tab, select (the fastest) or ‘Lightway TCP’ (can help you remain connected in the most challenging network situations)
- Then simply choose your desired server and connect
Although ExpressVPN promises a lot with the code change from Lightway, it is far from the only option on the market. View our list of the best VPN services to see what else we recommend.
