A woman is accused of a hit-and-run who left a 66-year-old pedestrians in West Town earlier this year. Officers of Justice tried to imprison the woman pending the trial, but the judge decided to let her go home instead.
Iryna Kalach, 39, was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi SUV from 2022 that hit Halyan Hudzan on January 24 in the 700 block of North Oakley, the prosecutors say.
Prosecutors told Mary Marubio that Hudzan had the priority and was in the pedestrian crossing when Kalach hit her and hit her around 8:48 am
A CPD report said that Kalach stopped for a moment and then accelerated over Hudzan’s body while turning east at Chicago Avenue and fled the stage. Kalach never called 911, never gave help and never reported the crash, according to the report.
CPD’s most important research unit for accident investigation released images of the vehicle that Hudzan met and asked people to call tips.
Legal reports show that judge Mary Marubio was willing to hold Kalach. She filled in most of a detention warrant and said that photos showed Kalach in the driver’s seat. The judge also wrote that Kalach reportedly “ignored a traffic light” and deals with “intentional acts after an accident that further injured the victim”, who was “towed”.
But Marubio finally decided to release Kalach with instructions to appear for future judicial data, according to records.
Kalach is confronted with the charges of crime that leaves the scene of a fatal crash and crime failure to provide assistance.
