Current is a new feature-length animated film directed by the Latvian filmmaker Gint Zilbalodisco-written by Zilbalodis and producer Matiss Kaza. The film focuses entirely on the animals’ movements, dramatic angles and emphatic lighting effects, completely abandoning dialogue for stirring music and emotional meowing, barking and purring.
Notable because it is rendered entirely in open source software Blendera tool used for creating 3D graphics and traditionally used for video game design, Current takes advantage of the possibilities of world-building. Critics compare the dreamy settings to a open world video gamewhich, unlike play which is more structured or linear, encourages exploration and the joy of discovery.
Current uses non-photorealistic imagery – also known as NPR, a computer graphics technique for expressing the aesthetics of other media, such as painting or drawing – to create otherworldly landscapes and interactions. Merging fantastical elements with precise animal movements, the film strikes a remarkable balance between the real and the unreal.
Current was selected for premiere in the A certain respect part of Cannes Film Festival in May, and also screened this year Annecy International Animated Film Festivalwhere it won three awards. Get hungry with the trailer and watch the film now in select cinemas.
