Chicago friends, colleagues and loved ones are Collect To support the family of Chicago police officer Malissa Torres, who was found dead this week by a self-laid shot wound at the nearby North District Station.
Torres, 34, is survived by her husband, Niko, and their 10-year-old son, Mason.
“We kindly ask for support from everyone who knew her and loved her, to unite to alleviate the financial challenges with which the family is now confronted,” wrote supporters in one Gofundme campaign That had collected almost $ 13,000 on Saturday morning.
“Every contribution, regardless of the amount, will be addressed to the family of officer Torres and is greatly appreciated,” the organizers wrote.
Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) reminded that Torres was often seen at farmers’ markets, community meetings and neighborhood events.
Hopkins said she “was known among her colleagues as a warm, hospitable and friendly soul.”
She was off-duty when a fellow officer found her in a toilet at the reception of the station, 1160 North Larrabee, around 2:07 am Thursday. The medical researcher of Cook County found that she died of suicide of a self -inflicted shot wound.
