The game Ghost of Tsushima, released by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020, took players on an extraordinary quest through the samurai world. Soon, even those who are not gaming enthusiasts will be able to embark on this journey. As Sony revealed at the 2025 CES press conference in Las Vegas, work is currently underway on the anime series based on the best-selling game for the Crunchyroll platform.
The news came as a surprise as a live-action movie based on the popular game was announced some time ago. The project, announced in 2021, was handed over to Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick film series. In November 2023, the director announced that work on the script had been completed. The project hasn’t been scratched yet, so the live-action film and anime series will likely be developed simultaneously.

What is the Ghosts of Tsushima game about?
Ghosts of Tsushima is a single-player video game created by Sony’s Sucker Punch Productions in 2020. It is set in Japan in the 13th century, during the first Mongol invasion. The player follows samurai Jin Sakai, the only remaining member of Clan Sakai and the cousin of Lord Shimura. Together with the five great families of the island of Tsushima, Jin tries to protect his homeland against the invaders.

The multiplayer mode with the title Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was also released in 2020. Unlike the single-player version, the game is based on Japanese mythology and features supernatural creatures and alternate worlds. It consists of nine missions that retell the story from the main game, combining the Mongol invasion and the battle with the evil demons. The player can choose a character from four available classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin or Assassin.
Ghost of Tsushima games allow users to explore the vast open world while taking part in battles and side missions. During the standoff, the player can use multiple types of weapons including a katana, bow and blowgun, as well as fireworks and smoke bombs to distract the enemies.

The sequel, titled Ghost of Yōtei, will debut in 2025.

For now, the makers have not revealed any plot details of the series. However, we know that the show will evolve from the multiplayer Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.

According to Crunchyroll, the series will premiere on the service in 2027.

The Ghosts of Tsushima anime series is directed by Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions – The Duel). General Urobuchi will write the script, while the studio Kamikaze Douga will provide the animation.
