A man on pretrial release for a complaint for a crime shot a teenager during a robbery attempt on the Blauwe Lijn, the prosecutors say. Malik Washington, 23, was recently identified by DNA tests of a glove police that had been restored during the investigation.
The shooting took place around 6:54 am on December 13, 2023, at the Western Blue Line Stop on the nearby west side.
Justice officers said that Washington approached a 17-year-old boy in the train, showed a gun and warned: “Don’t move. This is a robbery.”
When the boy refused to cooperate, Washington fired several rounds while the victim walked for his life. Bullets hit the teenager in the left arm and left armpit.
Judge James Murphy III held Washington on accusation of attempted murder and attempted armed robbery. Murphy noticed that Washington is being accused of running beyond the body of cases to make his escape.
Washington was on a provisional release for alleged possession of a gun during a traffic stop on April 16, 2023. He is also accused of robbing a 19-year-old victim in the 7700 block of South Racine in April 2024.
He is the 41st person accused of photographing, killing or trying to shoot or kill someone in Chicago in 2023 while he is on the pretial release. Those crimes concerned 51 victims, 14 of whom died.
The series ‘Not terrible’
This report continues our reporting of persons accused of killing, shooting or trying to kill or shoot at pretrial release for a crime accusation. CWBCHICAGO started our series of reports in November 2019 after Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans publicly mentioned“We have not had any terrible incidents” under the initiative of the Bond Reform of the Court.
The actual number of murders and shootings committed by people who are awaiting the trial for accusations of crimes is undoubtedly much higher than the number seen here. Since 2017, CPD has had less than 5% of non-fatale shootings and 33% of the murders.
