More than 50 evidence markers spread across a street in Back of the Yards Friday morning after gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets on a group of people, killing two victims and wounding five others in one of the city’s most violent shootings of the week.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooters.
According to Chicago police, the attack happened around 12:26 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Wood Street. Two masked gunmen approached a group standing on the block and opened fire. Witnesses reported the sound of automatic gunfire as the men fired dozens of bullets. Investigators placed more than fifty evidence markers in the area, most of which were next to individual shell casings, a sign of how many shots had been fired.
CPD said the ages of the two men killed were not known. A 23-year-old woman shot in the head was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. The condition of a 54-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman was in fair condition, while those of two men aged 21 and 32 were said to be in good condition, police said.
“These shootings are happening far too often, devastating families and traumatizing neighborhoods,” said Paul Rutherford, executive director of Crime Stoppers. He urged anyone with information to come forward, noting that tipsters can remain completely anonymous and are not required to speak to police or testify in court.
